Feminine Shapes
2017
Steel Rod, Pantyhose
Feminine Shapes explores the experience of the individual within rigid gender roles, and the burden of the expectations of femininity. A chain that was previously free-moving becomes stiff and stifled with its wrapping of pantyhose. At odds, the sharp edges of the shapes within puncture and tear at their wrapping, their true nature ill-fitting the confines in which they find themselves bound. A sense of tension and struggle pervades, where neither pantyhose nor chain can fully achieve their individual goals. So, too, do traditional ideals of femininity set themselves in opposition to the individual's freedom of self-expression. Even as they fight the confines of these expectations, they cannot break completely free so long as culture persists in dampening the "too loud", "too impetuous", "too much" person down to its own acceptable parameters.Â
